Stereotactic Breast Biopsy (2D and 3D)
Under mammographic guidance using the same (or similar) machine used for your mammogram with the breast gently compressed, the abnormality is targeted. Numbing medication is injected, and then the area that was targeted is sampled under vacuum assistance to obtain as much tissue as possible for pathologic diagnosis. A biopsy clip is then placed at the site after the samples are obtained to make sure the correct area was sampled, and to allow the breast surgeon to know where to go if surgery is ultimately necessary.
Ultrasound Guided Breast or Axillary Biopsy
The ultrasound machine is used to visualize and target the area of concern and obtain samples for pathologic diagnosis. Ultrasound guidance is the preferred method of breast biopsy, does not require breast compression like mammography, and is more comfortable for the patient. This procedure can be performed in the breast, axilla, and other parts of the body.
