Diagnostic Mammogram
This is an X-ray exam used to further evaluate any abnormality on your screening mammogram or in patients with any breast related symptoms (i.e. palpable lump, nipple discharge, focal pain, etc), by using additional supplemental views.
Roughly 10-15% of all screening exams get called back for a finding, and about 80% of those patients with a finding detected on a screening mammogram will have normal or benign findings after a diagnostic mammogram and/or ultrasound. Additionally, if a biopsy is recommended, about 80% of those will produce benign results. Some patients with an unremarkable diagnostic mammogram may undergo an ultrasound to confirm normal findings especially when the patient has dense breast tissue.
